I recently had the chance to visit Kentuck Knob, located in Dunbar Township, PA, approximately a 35 minute drive from the Donegal Holiday Inn Express and Suites. This was my first time to visit this particular Frank Lloyd Wright property and I wasn’t sure what to expect, knowing that I heard it was very different than the other Frank Lloyd Wright property in the neighborhood, Fallingwater.
Upon arriving at the property the first thing I noticed were giant birdhouses high up on display. They aren’t your typical cute little birdhouses but luxury mansions for our feathered friends. Continuing up the walkway I made it to the gift shop and cafe. There is an array of Frank Lloyd Wright literature for purchase along with interesting household gadgets in this charming gift shop. The cafe has different sandwiches and sweets to choose from before or after the tour, with the favorite being the selection of Hagan ice cream. I don’t want to give away too much, so you’ll have to book a tour of Kentuck Knob to learn the connection between it and Hagan ice cream!
After a few minutes of browsing the gift shop, the shuttle pulled in to take us to our destination. The view was breathtaking on the mountain with yellow daffodils in full bloom surrounding the entrance way.  Upon entering the home you are blown away by its unique beauty and a fascinating display of artifacts from all over the world that the owner has exhibited. Going through each room it was remarkable to see the use of space and how everything flowed beautifully together. The tour lasted about 30 to 40 minutes and our tour guide took time to answer all the questions we had.
At the end of the tour you are given the option to take the shuttle back down to the gift shop or walk down a trail to view sculptures. It was a gorgeous sunny day so I opted to walk down and was very grateful that I did. It was interesting to see the Palumbo’s vast collection. I would highly recommend if the weather is permitting to take the walk through the meadow.
I was very pleased with my time at Kentuck Knob, it was so much more than just a tour of a house but a real learning experience. They really take the time to educate you about the history of the property and why things were done the way they were. I’m seriously considering taking another tour in October just to see the views with the Fall foliage.
